Herbs
People have always thought of herbs as having a food value and a medicinal value. Here at HerbalVitaminHealth we shall think of herbs as having a health value. We will also alert readers to those herbs that may pose a danger under certain sets of circumstances.
The herbalists of long ago classified herbs into three categories: potherbs, flavor herbs and medicinal. However, it should be easy to see that there can be no defining line because some herbs are both used for flavoring and medicinal purposes.
There are three major families of herbs. The Compositae is the daisy family. The Labiatae is the thyme family, and the Umbelliferae is the parsley family. Herbs of the daisy family can be recognized by their flowers, which are composed of tiny flowers packed together. These will have an astringent, bitter and antiseptic properties. The Labiate herbs, such as thyme and mint, are strongly aromatic. The Umbellifers have small flowers with stalks that radiate from a central point like spokes.
